Alexander Chaushian

Alexander Chaushian was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1977, and began his musical studies at the age of seven at the Tchaikovsky School for Gifted Children. He continued his studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music, studying with Melissa Phelps (1992-95) and then at the Guild Hall School of Music and Dance, studying with Oleg Kogan. Since 1999, Alexander has held a fellowship at London's Royal Academy of Music, performing with the Krempf Trio. He has taken Master classes with such renowned cellists as Janos Starker, Steven Isserliss and David Geringas.

Among the prizes won thus far include First Prize at the Premio Mozart Competition (Italy, 1990), First Prize at the ARVO Music Competition (Netherlands, 1992) and First Prize at the junior level of the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1992). In 1997 he was selected at the Young Artists' Concert audition in New York, and more recently earned Third Prize at the 2002 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

Alexander has performed in numerous concert venues throughout Europe and North America, and with such esteemed ensembles as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra (at Vienna's Konzert haus), the Philharmonia Orchestra (London), Orchestra de la Suisse Romande (Geneva) and Les Solistes Européens (Luxemburg, conducted by Yehudi Menuhin). Alexander has likewise toured in Armenia, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Israel, Switzerland, Finland, Venezuela, Canada, and the United States - performing the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto with the Armenian Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall.
